Henry “Hank” Baker is the Afghanistan Affairs Unit’s economic officer where he covers all aspects of the Afghan economy. He served in Embassy Kabul’s political and peace/reconciliation sections in 2018-2019. He has also served as an economic officer focused on trade, investment and transportation in south China (2013-2015). On other assignments he worked as the special assistant to the ambassador at the U.S. Mission to the European Union in Brussels (2019-2022) and as a vice consul in northern Mexico (2016-2018). A native of Kentucky, he got his start in government service in Peace Corps Macedonia 2002-2005 and a customs internship at the U.S. Embassy in Montenegro in 2006. Prior to joining the Department of State he worked in business development at the Milan branch of a major U.S. law firm. He has a bachelor’s and master’s in international economics from John Hopkins University.
